It's that time of year again...

I seem to use the phrase in the subject only a couple of times each year. This time I'm referring to the Chicago Auto Show, one of the many things I look forward to each year. I will be going, and I will be taking Mario with me. At least, I hope I will. I don't want him to miss a single Auto Show as long as it's held in Chicago, much like I haven't missed one in at least the past decade.

This year I will be paying particular attention to family-oriented vehicles. Yes, we can fit everything in my Civic Hybrid ... but it's a case of "just because you can doesn't mean you should."

I had the misfortune of driving that poor car during the height of the blizzard and, let me tell you, it was one of the scariest experiences ever. The Civic Hybrid is the least powerful one in the lineup, which I knew going into the purchase, and throwing that at unplowed roads during. the height of the winds made me wish I'd have worn my brown pants.

So, it's with that feeling in mind that I'll be checking out other vehicles with greater interior volume and ground clearance. Not for myself, mind you -- I'm comfortable with the Honda of Fury -- but for Julie. She comes to the Auto Show with me every year, so she can provide input.

If you want to see pictures of a particular car that will be at the show, let me know in advance and I'll makes sure I take pictures.

Time really does fly.

Mario is almost four months old. Think about that for a minute. Four months ago today Julie and I were talking to her ever-expanding pregnant belly, telling its contents to stay put until October. Mario didn't stay put, though, and joined us as the sun rose on the last day of September. I should have figured as much, as most Klinkos celebrate their birthdays toward the end of a month.

In the past four months he has definitely gotten bigger. He weighs about 14 pounds now, nearly twice his birth weight. He swings his limbs around like nobody's business, babbles to his surroundings, smiles at familiar faces, and I even caught him rolling over. It may not seem like a terribly huge deal and, to be frank, I never knew what a big deal it really was until I saw myself how he started out: unable to stay awake for more than half an hour at a time, completely lacking the ability to make significant movements, and no vocalization capabilities whatsoever. Given that baseline, these steps are definitely huge.

So ... been quite busy with work and home lately. I'm sure things will eventually calm down on both fronts, but for now it's night after sleep-deprived night followed by busy days. I'm pretty sure I'm single-handedly keeping the global coffee industry running.

The year 2010 was as long as the years that preceded it, but it felt so much shorter. Looking forward to what 2011 has in store ...

During the week of December 6th meteorologists us warned of a big, scary, evil snowstorm that was going to sock us right in the face on the weekend of the 11th. The weekend rolled around and ... disappointment. There was definitely snow, and there may have been a lot of it in many places, but I didn't get hit by it nearly as hard as television's harbingers of doom had predicted. There was more wind than snow.

Last night was what I expected that weekend. Thankfully most people drove safely and didn't do anything stupid ... except that one guy in a Subaru Outback on Roosevelt Rd., he was an asshole. The snowblower started after 4 pulls (3 to prime, 1 to start), and the snow was off my driveway by 5:20 this morning.

I wonder if Mario will like playing in the snow as much as I did when I was a kid. I wonder if Daisy will like playing in the snow with him as much as she likes it when I kick snow around for her to attack. Guess I need to put a fence around the backyard ...
