Consumer Electronics Shouldn't Be "Too Technical"

When somebody is trying to decide between various consumer electronics and consults me for advice, I try to give that person enough information to decide for themselves. I don't like telling someone to buy a particular product because I don't want to be held accountable if that person is not satisfied with said product. If such a situation does arise, I get extremely annoyed and resent giving that person advice ... and my phone number, email address, home address, etc.

If I am trying to provide product- or technology-related information to someone, I do not want to be interrupted and told that the information I am providing is too technical. Let me put it this way: if I can explain a particular technology to my dad, and he can understand it and use that information to make educated purchasing decisions for himself, then that information can be used by anyone to do the same ... and I mean anyone. No exceptions.

With that said I'm not running around and spouting off unsolicited advice. To me, that's like the guy who used to stand near Golf & Rand (at least, I think that's where he stood), shouting at traffic with his Bible in hand. However, given my background in technology, don't expect simple "yes" and "no" answers from me. If that's what you want, go elsewhere.

Now ... I know this is going to be imported into Facebook, and I'd like to assure all of you that this is a general rant and not directed at any one of you.

Where do I begin?

As the subject says ... where do I begin? I guess those who read this site and don't follow me on Facebook may want a baby update or something along those lines, so here it is: Mario has grown 2 inches in length, and has gained 1 pound, 13 ounces over his birth weight. That puts him at 22", 9 lb 2 oz at one month of age. Apparently the amount of food he eats in one sitting surprised the doctor, based on his reaction.

Mario's got some strong lungs and vocal cords. This sentence can also be interpreted as "Mario screams a whole lot." He's able to pick up his head for a few seconds at a time, and can look left and right. He loves to ride in the car -- we took him all over the place today and he was quiet through the entire ride. He exercised his voice outside of the car, though.

Julie and I are wiped out, but we wouldn't have done this if we weren't ready for it.

Now ... I have another thing to say, but I'll leave that for my next post, which is coming soon.

I has a baby

Well, the wait is over, as is Julie's pregnancy. Our son arrived on September 30th at 6:27 in the morning. The time passed quickly (for me, anyway) and it sure looked and sounded painful, but in the end a small human entered the world.

I didn't think he'd be this small. Jeff knows, he was there when I washed the onesies. I didn't think he'd fit into them, but they're perfect.

His first night at home was pretty loud and eventful. He wanted to eat a lot, and needed to be changed a couple times. I hear it gets worse before it gets better. However, humans survived for thousands of years with less technology and knowledge than we have now, so we just need to stick with what we're doing and push through the sleepless nights.

So ... the biggest challenge of our lives has begun.

Some Direction

I've been messing with some open-source packages and I think I've found the one I'd like to use. Turns out that the package has some pretty nice customization options, so I can use it for other sites as well. Theming is also pretty easy. I'm hoping I can import all of the entries from this site so I don't need to keep the old script and files around.

Countdown is getting more and more intense over here. Julie's 38 weeks now, and our as-yet-unnamed son is getting less and less patient with his current housing situation, as it were.

Good times to begin soon.

Nuke it from orbit. It's the only way.

I need to remake this site. I need to put some time and effort into it. This is, and has been, my personal site for just over 10 years now. I've been running the page using this PHP script for a few years now and, while I'm pretty much fine with it, it needs to be freshened up.

Haven't decided the direction I'd take it, though ...
